I’m quite disappointed with both of the candidates. During the Friday night debate they played to their respective party bases and made all the right statements at all the right times. That was the problem, neither one of them came out of the box and really addressed the issues head on. When Jim Lehrer asked them to clarify what they would give up to pay for the $700 billion bailout of the banking mess they both support, they hedged and never answered his question directly. The truth is no one wants to hear the truth. Voters want to be lied to and told everything will be alright. (Ask Jimmy Carter about this one) So the candidates gave their audiences what they asked for, a lot of rhetoric.
Senator John McCain said he would cut spending and veto every spending bill that comes across his desk if he is elected President. Senator Barack Obama said he would end the Iraq war and raise taxes on the rich, meaning everyone earning over $250,000 a year. Neither candidate seems to have a firm grasp on reality. The bailout is coming and despite the resistance, it will pass. That means the Federal Government who can’t limit their own spending is going to manage the massive amount of bad debit created by the greed of bankers and the gullibility of the consumers who made bad choices enabled by these bankers. We have a long way to fall and everyone will pay for this crisis one way or another. If they don’t pass the bailout, almost everyone who has a stake in Wall Street will take a hit. Everyone who has a job will feel the pinch by either being laid off or putting up with lower pay for more work. Homeowners will either lose their homes or see them devalued down enough to eat away any equity they have.
The plain truth is that until we resolve this crisis, we can’t have more entitlements and we can’t fund more wars. America is going to have to tighten its collective belt and deal with the current reality responsibly. Obama is right about getting out of Iraq and McCain is right about cutting spending. Can we elect a hybrid that will do both. Maybe a McBama or a Republicrat.
